Most course content pages will have formative activities on them. They are called either Learn by Doing or Did I Get This? and are of varied length.
Learn by Doing: Give students the chance to practice the concept that they are learning, with hints and feedback to guide them if they struggle.
Did I Get This?: Provide students a chance to do a quick self-check and assess a their own understanding of the material before doing a graded activity.
These activities are key for providing students opportunities to practice what they are learning.
Formative activities are not graded and students have unlimited chances to work the questions. While these activities are not captured in the Gradebook, they will appear in the Learning Dashboard for instructors to review how individual students or entire classes performed on them.
First attempt accuracy on these activities informs learning estimates for students.
Components of Formative Activities
There are a few key elements to our formative activities which are designed to help students learn:
Targeted Feedback — most questions have targeted feedback for both correct and incorrect answer options which provides additional learning opportunities and guides student as they continue to work the problem.
Hints — most Learn by Doing activities have hints the student that provide additional guidance.
